Giving Is Good For You

What if I Haven’t Got Time?

Ellie, 15, from Birmingham, says she would like to volunteer but doesn't think she'd be able to manage it: "A lot of the projects for volunteering take up too much time and I can't fit it in with my schoolwork."

Like Ellie, you might be worried that you’re too busy to volunteer, with other commitments such as school, hobbies and perhaps a part-time job. That’s understandable, but don’t get put off at the first hurdle.

The great thing about volunteering is that in most cases its flexible- it’s up to YOU how much of a commitment you want to make. You can choose to give as much or as little time as you like. Whether you have a couple of days a week spare, or just a few hours a month, there will be something out there that you can do.

George, 14, from Bristol, reckons there's no such thing as being too busy: "You can make time to do a bit of voluntary work. Think of all the hours you spend watching TV!"

Great, So What Do I Need To Know?

There are many ways to research the voluntary organisations that interest you. The internet is a good place to start. Most organisations have websites where you can find details of their projects and how to get involved.

Your local community centre should also be able to point you in the right direction. They will have useful information about opportunities in your area, and will be able to help you get in touch with the ones you are interested in.

It’s also a good idea to have a look in your local newspaper, as opportunities may be advertised there.

Once you have found an organisation that appeals to you, phone or email them and ask how you can help.

It’s a good idea to find out as much information as you can about the project before you commit to it, so that you know what to expect and that it is right for you.

So what are you waiting for? Get involved and make a difference!
