Lindsey Lohan is another to be added to the list of teenage smokers along with Britney Spears who took up the habit when she was also a teen. Lohan has a series of respiratory problems but still but still participates in smoking and has even admitted to using cannabis but ‘hating it.’ However, she does fret about the influence on younger fans of her habit. ‘A girl with asthma, smoking,’ she says. ‘Great’.
About 2% of boys and 2% of girls start smoking at the age of 11-12.
By the time they are 13-14, 16% of girls and 8% of boys smoke.
And by the time they reach 15-16, 31% of girls and 16% of boys smoke regularly.
So, teenage girls are now twice as likely to be smokers as boys. Some adults think that they are using tobacco to control their appetite. Others think that Hollywood stars seen smoking in films and celebrity magazines have made it cool and glamorous again, like the 1930s.
Health experts think that taking up smoking at high school, can establish a powerful life long chemical dependency as addictive as heroin, cocaine, or alcohol, as well as causing serious health problems.
