Moving On Up... Your Guide to Starting High School

Teachers and classes

You may have six or more teachers teaching you different subjects in different classrooms. It’s probably a bit confusing to begin with, but don’t worry, you’ll soon get used to it.

It’s a good idea to make a list of each subject, the teacher’s name, and the classroom number.

Try to familiarise yourself with your timetable as much as you can. After a few weeks you’ll find you know when you’ve got PE and what time you’re supposed to be in double maths, but to start with, keep a copy in your bag with you in case you forget where you’re supposed to be.

Since your new school is probably a lot bigger than your last school, you might have trouble finding your way around at first. To avoid getting lost, get a map of your school and pick out where your classes are. Keep it in your bag with your timetable for the first few weeks.

Lunch and breaks

Find out about what you can do on breaks and lunch – some schools have lunch time clubs and activities, others allow you to go to local shops.

If you forget your lunch money, don’t worry. Speak to your form tutor, someone in the office or a lunchtime – supervisor and they’ll be able to help you.
