Bullying

Oi fatty spotty speccy ginger!

Is it teasing or bullying?

Bullying

High school can be the best fun, lots of laughs and jokes, but when does having a laugh and a bit of fun become bullying?

If someone or maybe several people at school are repeatedly doing things that hurt you and make you feel scared or upset, you are being bullied.

You are not alone, it is something that happens to about half of all boys and girls at sometime during their school years.

Bullying can take different forms, sometimes verbal, sometimes physical, sometimes emotional, and can include -

  • Being called names
  • Being teased or made fun of
  • Having rumours spread about you
  • Being threatened
  • Receiving unpleasant texts or e-mail
  • Being ignored or excluded from a group
  • Being pushed around or even attacked
  • Being forced to give up money or possessions such as mobile phones
  • Being touched or forced into sexual acts

Many well known and successful people were bullied at school.

Justin Timberlake

Justin Timberlake was a target for bullies at school because he preferred music to sport. 'I grew up in Tennessee where you either play football or you don't do anything at all,' he explains. 'I was a treated as an outcast due to being interested in music.'

Tom Cruise

Mission impossible actor Tom Cruise was also bullied at school because of his dyslexia. He attended 15 different schools so was often picked on as the new boy too. However, he learned that he had to stand up for himself if he wanted to get by at school.

Orlando Bloom Kate Winslet

Lee Ryan from blue and Orlando Bloom were also taunted at school for having dyslexia. Other successful people that were bullied include Gareth Gates because of his stammer and Kate Winslet because of her weight.

Prince Harry

Even Prince Harry gets bullied for being ginger, Harry's army pals have reportedly nicknamed him "Ginger Bullet Magnet" and are thought to have bought ginger wigs to wear in Iraq!
