An Australian girl has set off on an around the world solo sailing trip – even though she is only 16-years-old!

Jessica Watson left Sydney harbour in her pink yacht for the next eight months whilst she attempts the 38,000 kilometre trip.

Her aim is to break the world record to become the youngest person to sail solo and without any assistance around the world.

Unfortunately, Jessica ran into problems before the race had even begun. Back in August she collided with a 63,000-tonne cargo ship on a practice run.

Since then, officials in Queensland have tried to persuade her family to abandon the trip, however Jessica’s family have leaped to her defence and say that she is an experienced sailor and is more than capable of making the journey.
