An American man celebrated his 113th birthday yesterday with a party at his retirement home.
Born in 1896, Walter Breuning has outlived all of his family. His wife died in 1957 after 35 years of marriage and he has never had children.
Walter puts his long life down to eating well and keeping fit; even now he takes a daily stroll around the halls of his retirement home.
He told friends gathered for his birthday: “Remember that life’s length is not measured by its hours and days, but by that which we have done therein. A useless life is short if it lasts a century.”
